Hiring a Contractor? Read This First!
New year new home projects?
Home improvement projects can be exciting, but finding the right contractor is key to making sure things go smoothly. Whether you’re planning a small upgrade or a full renovation, taking the time to ask the right questions can save you time, money, and stress.
Before hiring a contractor, start by getting at least three bids. Comparing multiple options will give you a better idea of fair pricing, timelines, and the scope of work included. A lower price isn’t always better—make sure you understand what’s covered so there are no surprises later.

It’s also important to check credentials. A reputable contractor should be licensed, bonded, and insured. If something goes wrong, you want to be protected. Taking the extra step to verify their credentials now can save you a major headache later.
Ask for references and follow up with past clients. A good contractor should have no problem sharing their work history. Ask if they were satisfied with the results, whether the project stayed on schedule, and how the contractor handled any issues that came up.
Once you’ve found someone you trust, review the contract carefully. Everything should be in writing—the scope of work, payment terms, timeline, and any warranties. Never rely on verbal agreements alone!

And finally, understand the payment terms. Avoid paying the full amount upfront. A structured payment schedule—such as an initial deposit, progress payments, and a final payment upon completion—ensures the work stays on track and meets your expectations.
